The Seed of Longevity

sesame seed

So as I sit in my Herb class listening to my teacher tell the stories of his old days in China I’m usually intrigued and floored when I hear about something as simple as a seed as being the secret to looking and feeling young. Chinese medicine never ceases to amaze me, but the way my Professor tells his stories can literally put you in the moment. He mentions of the “younger” ladies who would always get asked “why are you yelling at your father”? “That’s not my father, that’s my son!” ß Now if this sentenced didn’t just make you go “hum?” Then I don’t know what will. See the secret to staying looking young in China is a tablespoon of black sesame seeds 1-2x daily. It’s a beauty staple in Asia. The women take the sesame seeds their whole life, their skin hardly wrinkles, their hair stay long thick dark and beautiful, while their son’s and husbands continue to age. I know I’ve seen an article or two on why or how do Asian women tend to not age? Well who knew on a Thursday afternoon sitting in Herb class the secret would be revealed to me. Of course it’s not just for antiaging but also has an array of other health benefits.

“Taking black sesame seeds can heal all the chronic illness after 100 days, improve skin tone on body and face after 1 year, reverse gray hair after 2 years, and regrow teeth after 3 years.”

says the Materia Medica of Herbal Medicine, the largest and most comprehensive medical writings in the history of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

This herb is also known as Hei Zhi Ma (Sesami Semen Nigrum) and related experiments show that the content of vitamin E contained in this herb is the highest in all foods of plant origin. It is well known that vitamin E can promote cell division and delay cell senescence. Long-term use can counteract or neutralize cell senescence and then delay aging and extend life expectancy.

Some other health benefits associated black sesame seeds are it improves:

  • Heart health
  • Liver and kidney function
  • Mental acuity
  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Hair and skin

According to Chines medicine aging is the result of a deficiency of blood and jing in the liver and kidneys. Jing also called Essence is your life force, you are born with all the Jing you are going to get and you can supplement it throughout life with healthy lifestyle and food.  When your blood or Jing becomes deficient this is when the aging process starts to take over. Have you ever wondered why some people are fully functional at 90 yrs old look great and still have life in them? Then you see some people at 60 yrs old, broken hips, look 90, their body and mind have just aged horribly? This is due to the way we treat our Essence. Supplement your Jing with good foods and a healthy lifestyle (your body will thank you for it yrs from now)

Also a tablespoon 1-2x a day of black sesame seeds couldn’t hurt 😉

Also known as San Jiao

Did you know that remedies for your child’s most common ailments may be no further than your own two hands? Yes, acupressure can be your go-to remedy for a host of conditions, such as cough, constipation, sleep problems, and earaches. The great thing about acupressure is that once you learn some basic points and techniques you will have an effective and gentle treatment method on hand for whenever your little one gets sick. Acupressure can be used in place of acupuncture to get the same effect. Children are especially easy to treat with acupressure because their energies are still very pure and unburdened by years of toxicity. With children a small amount of acupressure can have a great therapeutic effect.

Dealing with Anxiety?

There are so many SUPER BENEFICIAL HERBS out there that I think I‘m going to start an “Herb of the Week”.  This is one of the main reasons I wanted to start this blog. So many people think that they have to deal with their issues in silence or if they do speak up they will have to take a prescription with horrific side effects. This isn’t always necessary, a lot of issues we deal with can be handled with beautiful herbs that Mother Nature blessed us with.

Beating Infertility with Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) suggests that there are three main causes of infertility: deficiency syndrome, stagnancy syndrome and heat syndrome.

When you are deficient this means your hormones are not properly influencing the sexual and reproductive functions.

When you are stagnant your body is preventing the sexual and reproductive organs from functioning despite normal hormone levels and a normal ability to respond to hormones.  This has the impact of restricting circulation to tissues.

The heat syndrome may be associated with an infection or inflammatory process.  It can produce abnormal semen quality leading to male infertility, while gynecologic infections can cause female infertility by blocking the passages, altering the mucous membrane conditions or influencing the local temperature.

All three syndromes can be treated with Chinese herbs, acupuncture or a combination of both.  These traditional Chinese approaches can also, and are often, combined with Western medicine in treating infertility.

Herbs to ward off the Flu

For my first herb post I figured I would start with one of my favorite herbal formulas right now, Da Qing Ye (Isatidis Folium) aka Isatis Leaf and Ban Lan Gen (Isatidis Radix) aka Isatis stem. This Herb is fantastic at warding off febrile diseases. One of the main febrile diseases we see in America is the Flu(any kind of flu). This plant can be taken internally and is thought to have antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory actions. These herbs can also be applied externally to combat mumps. A beautiful formula is Ban Lan Gen Chong ji, patients come in with fever and sore throat start taking this tea and usually see quick improvement with their symptoms. It can also be used preventatively. This formula was used in China when they experienced the SARS outbreak and has become a staple in many household medicine cabinets. The formula can use the stem, the leaf, and usually a variety of different plants that accentuate the effects. Please feel free to check out the blog post below on it.

*You can usually find this formula online and easily obtain it. Of course anytime you feel sick I highly encourage you to see a DAOM or Naturopath and get prescribed the proper dosage based on your symptoms and your size. While most herbs are very safe it is highly recommended you see a professional when looking into herbs. Lucky for you getting in to see a DAOM is usually same day and doesn’t require insurance. Most apts are very inexpensive ranging anywhere from $45-$100, and this usually includes an acupuncture treatment and herbs. *
